Every trademark application names the goods or services it covers, and each one belongs to a numbered class in the Nice Classification: Classes 1 to 34 are goods, Classes 35 to 45 are services. Type what you sell or do, see which classes it usually falls under, add the ones that fit, and copy the list with the official WIPO headings. It is built for founders, makers and small teams getting ready to file or to clear a name.
This is a starting list. The official Nice list and a trademark attorney decide the final classes and wording.

How it works
Headings. The 45 class headings on this page are copied word for word from WIPO's Nice Classification publication, Nice Classification, 12th edition, version 2026 (in force 2026-01-01). Short names such as "Clothing, footwear, headwear" are ours, to help you scan.
Suggestions. We wrote a list of everyday words and phrases for goods and services and tied each to the classes it usually lands in. Your text is lowercased, split into words, and matched against that list. Longer phrases win over single words, so coffee shop points to Class 43 and coffee alone points to Class 30. If a word is not in the list, we fall back to words that appear in the official headings, and the result says so.
No data leaves your browser. Matching runs on your device against a file loaded with the page. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
What it cannot do. It does not read your whole business, it does not know which exact wording the USPTO will accept, and it does not search existing trademarks. The USPTO expects specific wording for goods and services, found in its ID Manual, and a class number alone is not enough.
There are 45 classes in the Nice Classification: Classes 1 to 34 cover goods and Classes 35 to 45 cover services. The USPTO and most national offices use it.
Can one trademark application cover several classes?
Yes. An application can list more than one class, and the USPTO charges its filing fee per class, so every extra class adds to the cost. Pick the classes where you actually sell or plan to sell, not every class that looks vaguely related.
What class is software or an app in?
Downloadable software and apps are usually Class 9. Software delivered online as a hosted service, and software design and development work, are usually Class 42. A product that is both a downloadable app and a hosted service often needs both classes.
Do I need Class 35 if I sell my products online?
If you only sell your own goods, the goods class generally covers them. Class 35 is for retail services you provide for the benefit of others, for example a store that sells other makers' products. A trademark attorney can tell you which applies to your setup.
Is this the same as a trademark search?
No. This tool helps you choose classes. It does not check whether a name is already taken. To check a name, search the USPTO's trademark database and read the guides linked below.
How current are the class headings?
They are the official WIPO headings from the Nice Classification, 12th edition, version 2026 (in force 2026-01-01). WIPO revises the Nice Classification, so check https://nclpub.wipo.int/enfr/ for the edition in force when you file.
